  • Over-promising and under-delivering are normal - that goes for both directions. I think it’s undeniable that machine learning / AI has been improving at a steady pace. Sure, the current cycle will reach its peak, but there will be another and another. I don’t believe AGI is a matter of if, more a matter of when. Whatever technology they’re using now is not it, but it may play a part and even if it doesn’t become AGI, it will be one more thing to tick off and explore new roads.

As someone said “this is the worst AI will ever be”. It’ll keep getting better. We just have to be prepared for the next cycle and not be caught off-guard. But knowing humans, we are terrible at long-term planning and preparing. The next cycle will catch the majority with their pants down and we will be scrambling to pull them up while whatever it is was developed changes our world yet again.

  • I disagree with this as it’s a prejudgement with little to no knowledge about anybody’s roots, circumstances, history, etc. It categorically puts people into boxes and is the flawed reasoning of racists, anti-semites, homophobes, and so on.

For example, Islamic terrorists aren’t born terrorists. Some of them are born into the wrong family and fed hatred all their lives. Some had to live through hardships you and I can’t even begin to imagine surviving. Others are bullied, ostracised, and made feel worthless only to find belonging and recognition in the only group that would listen to them and make them feel seen.

Ask yourself, if you grew up and had to go through the same things as some people, would you still be the you that typed what you typed?

Yes, some people have always been assholes and never changed, they do exist. I’m not denying that.

  • Hmmm… that’s nominally better. Which user would respond to a PII request from an admin? I for sure wouldn’t. Would you? And servers could run their own bots too, no need to pretend on a browser.

But I do agree that with control of admin and choice who to federate with, it is possible to reduce the number of bots. Eliminating them is not possible, IMO. I’d be surprised if there’s any defence against a bot that can control a browser and maybe even go as far as pretend to use a mouse.

  • I’ve had friends tell me about the same thing happening to them. One particular friend tried to call another one who had become a mom (it was planned) and the mom gave the phone to the kid. The friend politely told them that they wanted to talk to them, not the kid and asked whether there was a better time to call. It went over well.

People really can be quite touchy about their kids, but you can be direct, it’s not like it would change much for you. Just say that you’re not really a baby person and would enjoy the time talking to her. Ask her if there’s a date and time that’s convenient for her without the kids. If she gets offended, then that’s her problem and you can write her off. If she’s understanding, that’s great!

  • That entire context was missing in your post: you have parental controls activated aka you opted into scanning.

The post was presented as if your daughter just had a normal iPhone + not everybody uses an iPhone. You can’t expect people to know that the feature exists + that it’s activated on your daughters phone. I read daughter and thought she was an adult.
